Grove Design Hotel – Innovative Game for Adults
Naturally the scale and scope is not as grand as when crossing the Brooklyn Bridge in New York, but guides specifically point out to tourists (old Tbilisi residents already know it by heart) that a new Tbilisi lies beyond that bridge. If in older times there were gardens, vineyards, Germans’ district here, during the last hundred year King Tamar’s Avenue and its adjacent streets represent the face of industrial and post-Soviet Tbilisi – wide avenues, buildings with strict and proud appearance that are now looking quite old. However, there’s one building in that new Tbilisi, at the end of the bridge, which looks like a structure from Tbilisi of the future. At first, one can even miss it, because it’s obscured by trees, then you are wondering how you could not notice that six-storied building with its original architecture. Maybe it’s because of the trees or maybe it was the architect’s design all along, but the fact is Grove Design Hotel is here and it’s an impressive but tasteful sign of modern innovations and technological achievements.
English word “grove” means a group of trees and a tree as an essential part of nature and as a valuable and natural material is the main basis of this structure – because of the concept and original idea, one of the trees that stood in the area where the future building was to be erected was not cut down, rather it became a part of the structure and now it follows the glassy wall along its whole vertical as a strong symbol of nature, oldness and futurism.
It can be said that the tree is really a symbol, because the rest of the hotel looks really futuristic especially against the background of “external” Tbilisi. Elevator walls are thick-pile and soft and you get the feeling it’s taking you to private chambers of a techno club. Corridors have soft floors of various colors, and walls are uniformly smooth, some parts of the wall are glossy and one can’t even see even a crack on them, let alone a door. You can guess that you’ve arrived at your room only by the number projected from above on the floor. Inside the room everything looks like a game too, not because it’s difficult to guess how everything works; it’s just that all details function in a way that would entertain you or make you smile when touched, observed or used – automatic, unconscious actions that do not deserve much thought or time are turned into humor and adventure.
No matter how fashionable an interior is, one is looking for comfort, quality and fast and attentive service in a hotel; Grove Design Hotel makes you feel that spending a night there should awaken your dormant sensitiveness and perception skills, which are diligently dulled by routine existence.
Here even rooms have special names, many of them are based on colors; wit is equally felt in the interior and names and it’s so strong that the rest of Tbilisi looks different from its windows – for some it may be stranger, for some older or vice versa.
A hotel is no longer just a place to spend a night. First of all, it of course includes catering rituals. In Grove Design Hotel all of this is compounded with futuristic humor. Glossy leather-bound chairs, swing-chairs, glass wall and unexpected accessories characteristic to 1970-ies suddenly intruding in this environment, which bring about both strict and nostalgic moods and once again awaken perception skills and sensations.
